Friends of Oak Hill Newsletter – September 2026
Summer days are getting shorter but there is plenty of activity at Oak Hill. The Center hosted the Stoaked Race in early August, we will soon be hosting mountain biking sessions for Dartmouth First Year Trips, orientation hikes for the Richmond Middle School, Borderline Mountain Bike Team has begun their practices, Cross Country Runners are out on the trails prepping for their competition season and our Kendall friends are enjoying the nicely mowed trails too. Not to mention we see many of you out there biking on the ever expanding and improving Oak Hill/Trescott MTB trail network. Finally, we have our eyes out for you preseason roller skiers; a common sight on the roads and in our paved parking lot.
As we look ahead to the fall, here are a few updates on current projects and upcoming events:
The team has replaced culverts and improved drainage at multiple locations around the Silver Fox trails, and replaced a bridge at the bottom of the old “war zone”. More work to improve grooming and drainage on the Top of Oak loop is underway.
Construction on a new mountain bike trail to ease the climb to the top of Oak will be underway this fall. This trail will also be designed for adaptive access.
Preparations are underway to launch snowmaking on a small area of Garipay to improve options for young skiers early in the season and to ease pressure on the stadium.
The Volunteer and Community Day and cook out day is set for Sunday, October 11. There will be live music and plenty of food (pot luck). Sign up here if you can join us.
The Ford Sayre Junior Team (JNT) will have an assortment of desserts available by donation at the Volunteer and Community Day on October 11. The team is raising money for their Travel Fund, which supports end-of-season championship expenses for all skiers who qualify for the U16s, Eastern, and Junior National championships. Please support the team and enjoy some sweet treats!
Survey results from last year indicate a very high degree of community appreciation for the Center, the quality of the grooming and snowmaking, the hospitality of the team, and the overall experience. Thanks to those who offered comments. Two suggestions stood out and we are working on them. First, A new dog walking trail will be groomed on the golf course from the south parking area to the fire station to serve those hoping for a dedicated area to walk their dogs and to limit problems and improve safety on the ski trails. Second, plans are underway to expand the lodge to add two bathrooms and a small kitchen area. These amenities will not be available until next year – we still need to do some fundraising and design work, but the project is moving ahead.
